چکیده

An understanding of dynamics of the speech production process may lead to a breakthrough in increasing the quality of synthesized voice and contribute to medical science with respect to treating voice disorder. However, little is known about mechanisms of speech dynamics, in particular about complex interactions of glottal flow and vocal fold vibration. In this paper, a two-dimensional viscoelastic body model of the vocal folds coupled with an unsteady glottal flow is proposed, and we demonstrate the speech production process by using that model. The vocal fold is represented by an elastic body, which has an effective mass of the vocal fold and is supported by distributed elements composed of a nonlinear spring and damper. The speech production process is simulated by numerically solving equations of nonlinear compressible viscous fluid coupled with motion of vocal fold excluding effects of the collision of each vocal fold to simplify an analysis. The results indicated that the upper and lower edges of the vocal fold vibrated with a phase difference. Furthermore, a change in pressure in the larynx synchronized with the vocal fold vibration, and both amplitude and fundamental frequency of the speech wave slightly fluctuated with time. Summary, a proposed model is useful for a description of glottal source dynamics, although there remain a problem of taking account of effects of the collision between the both vocal folds.

Glottal source and vocal-tract separation Estimation of glottal parameters, voice transformation and synthesis using a glottal model

This study addresses the problem of inverting a voice production model to retrieve, for a given recording, a representation of the sound source which is generated at the glottis level, the glottal source, and a representation of the resonances and anti-resonances of the vocal-tract. This separation gives the possibility to manipulate independently the elements composing the voice. There are man...

Regulation of glottal closure and airflow in a three-dimensional phonation model: implications for vocal intensity control.

Maintaining a small glottal opening across a large range of voice conditions is critical to normal voice production. This study investigated the effectiveness of vocal fold approximation and stiffening in regulating glottal opening and airflow during phonation, using a three-dimensional numerical model of phonation. The results showed that with increasing subglottal pressure the vocal folds wer...

A Numerical Experiment on Waveform Fluctuation within the Larynx

An analysis of fluctuations of speech wave, i.e., pitch, amplitude, and waveform, is a subject of growing interest for improvement in the quality of synthesized voice. However, little information with respect to the sound source itself in speech production is available, since it is difficult to measure fluid and acoustic motions within the larynx. The purpose of the present study is to clarify ...

Session 3aSC: Speech Communication 3aSC8. Source-filter interaction in the opposite direction: subglottal coupling and the influ- ence of vocal fold mechanics on vowel spectra during the closed phase

Studies of speech source-filter interaction usually investigate the effect of the speech transfer function (loading) on vocal fold vibration and the voice source. In this study we explore how vocal fold mechanics affect the transfer function throughout the glottal cycle, with emphasis on the closed phase. Coupling between the subglottal and supraglottal airways is modulated by the laryngeal imp...
